Lately, people have been asking me about how is the fashion industry in Cape Verde and what are the initiatives done so far, so i decided to make this post just to share my thoughts.
For being a very young and small country, Cape Verde (only 39 years of independence), has been developing and growing economically quite fast. Well, I must say that I am actually proud that fashion is a subject growing a lot in the past 2-3 years in Cape Verde and that there are few upcoming designers presenting their own collections.
We have been a country that imports a lot, specially within the fashion industry. A lot of merchandisers, boutique owners and shops travel to Brazil, USA and Europe to buy fashion items and commercialize them in Cape Verde with a higher price range.
For a very long time we only had ateliers where people could have their clothes done or repaired but nothing like a designer/stylist that is actually deciding everything from fabrics to designs of the garments or having their own concept store.
Cape Verde now present also an online fashion magazine named SO WHAT? CV which has its first edition coming out tomorrow.
The number 0 magazine came out in December 2013 and it shows different scenarios of the island of Sao Vicente in Cape Verde Fashion Week parade , at the fish market on the beach of laginha and streets of Mindelo.
Designer: Mirte da Graça
Transcorpus (Angola-resident in CV)
Designer: Lisete Pote
Stylist: Sonia Tavares
I just can’t wait to launch my first fashion show at Cape Verde fashion week soon;)
